Homeschooling

In the fall of 2004, God laid a passion on my heart….and a verse:

Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge (prov 1:7a)

And, after months of prayer and discussion and research about this schooling option, my husband and I decided to start homeschooling. This felt like a crazy decision, seeing that I had 4 babies ages: 4,3,2, and a newborn.
However, I knew this was what the Lord was calling me to, and I was SO SO excited! Teaching was my passion, my children were my passion! It only felt natural to bring the two together in harmony. (ahem, did I say “harmony”? what a funny way to describe our chaotic homechool!) 😉
Anyways, the more we did it…the more it just “fit us.”
I know it’s not for everyone, and I am grateful we live in a country with so many options and the freedom of choice!
But, as for me…..
I was falling in love with the idea of not rushing out the door. Cuddling on the couch and reading books all day together. Taking vacations and field trips whenever we wanted. Learning about the things that excited us…not just what was in the books!

“Tell Me and I Forget, Teach Me and I Remember, Involve Me and I Learn”
~Ben Franklin

I then started to realize and truly come to understand my “real reasons for homeschooling.” These reasons are what hold me and ground me on those HARD days!
Homeschooling….schooling at home is the way we get to slow down life and soak each other in.  It’s our mode of freezing time and making the most of it!
People always ask if we plan to homeschool through highschool and my “stand by” answer is always “we take it year by year.” God is a God of surprises and He could, at any time, direct us to another path. However, I will say that “Lord-Willing” we want to homeschool our kids right up to College!
So how does it work in this home??
I must say it’s evolved over the years! But I do have some solid curriculums, “old- faithfuls” that have been time-tested and  I have used and re-used and used again!
They are:
-Handwriting w/o Tears
Mystery of History
When they were younger and we did not have a dedicated school room I developed the “breakfast board” to start our mornings with.

-Hooked on Phonics
-Sequential Spelling
-IEW writing
-Explode the Code
-Vocabulary from Classical Roots
The Workbox System (highly recommended for organizations and to keep kiddies on task, it has many variations….don’t have to have a huge piece of furniture like this to do it!)

***and I just heard about this awesome resource! The Easy Peasy homeschool. IT IS FREE!!  The curriculum is  all laid out for you day by day! Did I mention it’s FREE!!!! BOY, I would have been ALL over this like butter on bread if this had been out when I first started!
Also, with the blessing of SO MANY choices comes the curse of “what do I choose????” So, I would recommend visiting these two sites to research or ask questions about a certain curriculum. The ladies are SO SO helpful!
See these links on how to get started!
You can Homeschool (this is the site that helped win me over 10 years ago to this method of education)
Also, please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have, I’d be happy to help if I can!
